Alberto Rey joins MC Underground Business Unit (MCU)
29 Jan 2026
Alberto Rey (53) has joined the MC Underground Business Unit (MCU) as its Global Head, effective from 1 January 2026. A qualified mining engineer with over 25 years of experience in international underground construction and mining, Rey will bring extensive technical, commercial and leadership expertise to his new role taking over the baton from Dr Joerg Stank, who has successfully led the initiative in recent years.
International management experience in underground construction
Rey brings over two decades of leadership experience from his previous roles at an international construction chemicals group, where he has held numerous senior positions since 2003. Most recently, he served as Head of Key Account & Project Management in the Global Project Support Team, holding global responsibility for supporting complex, large-scale underground and infrastructure projects. Earlier, as Key Project and Market Development Manager for Concrete and Waterproofing, he developed global market strategies and introduced innovative concrete and waterproofing solutions. He led the global fibre project for 15 years and actively supported major tunnelling and mining projects in 87 countries.
Solid engineering education and career in underground construction
Alberto Rey holds an Executive MBA from the Escuela Europea de Negocios (EEN), Oviedo (Spain), and a Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering from the ETS Ingenieros de Minas de Oviedo. He began his professional career working on mining research and development projects at the University of Oviedo, focusing innovations in coal mining. He worked for a tunnel design and geotechnical engineering company before taking up the role of Tunnelling and Mining Manager in the construction chemicals industry at local, regional and global levels.
Strong international networking within professional committees and associations
Alberto has represented his former company in the underground industry in various roles. Since 2012, he has been an examiner and professor at the European Federation of National Associations for Concrete (EFNARC), as well as a representative at the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA). He held the position of ITATech Vice Chair from 2018 to 2023. He was also a member of the MSFA (Macro Synthetic Fiber Association), the FRCA (Fiber Reinforced Concrete Association) and the AETOS (Asociación Española de Túneles y Obras Subterráneas). He will continue to represent MC Bauchemie in these organisations.
“We are pleased to welcome Alberto Rey as an outstanding addition to our leadership team. He brings more than two decades of international experience in civil tunnelling and mining projects across all continents. His career combines deep engineering expertise with strong commercial capabilities, which he will apply very effectively in building and further developing our new MCU business unit,” says Dr. Jörg Stank, Director Corporate Development.
